网上“跨洋互动”是一本多维的、动态的、不断延续的“书”,是为探索二语习得的规律创建的最原始、最丰富、最宝贵的语料库。在这个“宝库”里,我们可以慢慢发现并挖掘出促进教学改革的“宝藏”。第19轮“跨洋互动”围绕着中美两部题材相似的电影——《盲山》(Blind Mountain)和《噩梦》( Nightmare in Badham County)展开写作互评和讨论。在观察此轮“跨洋互动”中美四组学生的互动过程中,笔者观察到大部分作者都表达了对这两部电影最深刻的理解,并且通过分析两部电影的异同,提出了自己的看法,双方学生正逐步携手跨入“思”的殿堂,让互动更具思想交汇的色彩。

一. 文化交流

美方学生在作文中提到他们不太了解中国文化,中方学生在评论里介绍到:

You mentioned that you do not know too much about Chinese culture. As I'm a student of liberal arts, I can tell you something about Chinese culture. The culture of Chinese ancient femininity is very rich, but the most important is that the femininity possesses a very low status. That is the reason why Bai was treated unfairly. This status has not got thorough improvement up to now. In the past several decades, the progressive thinkers have given an acute criticism to the feudal treatment of women to enhance the women's status in society and family. Thanks to the progressive thinkers, the traditional thought of male superiority to female is fading gradually.
该同学指出,中国电影里女主角受到不公平待遇是因为女性一直处于一个比较低的社会地位,但是近几十年,因为一些进步分子为提高女性的社会地位做出了很多努力,所以这些“重男轻女”的现象慢慢有所改善。

美方学生对此,在reflection里说道:

...Secondly, I've learned more about the Chinese culture. Watching the film, doing research, and talking with my partners has lead me to learn more about Chinese culture and some of the issues that happen in their society....

...其次,我学到了更多的中国文化,通过看电影、做研究、和我的搭档交流,我了解到更多的中国文化以及中国的一些社会现象...

通过此次互动,激发了美国学生对中国文化的兴趣,让他们更加想要了解中国文化,促进了中国文化的传播:

I'm surprised that you're surprised about my thoughts on your essay. I really enjoyed reading about the knowledge you shared on the different issues that these films highlighted. It is also probably because I do not know anything about Chinese culture or past culture so I was very intrigued by your essay.Johanna

You made some very good points and through reading your essay I was able to learn much more about Chinese culture.Cara

同时,中方学生也感谢美方学生,不仅能让他们学习更地道的英语表达方法,还了解了很多美国文化。如,一名同学在评论里说道:

It’s nice to hold dialogues and exchange views with you. And it’s also interesting to learn about American culture.

因为“跨洋互动”不仅是一个练习写作,提高英语水平的平台,同时也是一个文化交流平台,所以笔者认为双方学生都要对自己国家的文化有很好的把握,要深思熟虑、深入研究之后才可以交流一些文化方面的东西,不能让国外友人产生对中国文化的误读而形成一种不好的定势。

二. 语法表达

2.1 中方同学句子表达不精炼

美方同学在评论中说道中方的这种长句子会引起误解或让人难以理解,如:

My main emphasis for revision would be that although you use good thoughts and ideas in your transitions, the grammatical errors in some of them make it hard to follow, as seen above.

You say, "The color discrimination has faded as time goes by , but still exists till today as a result of colonial ideology since the black slave trade in 17th century," a better way to say this may be, " Although color discrimination has faded over time, it still exists today as a result of colonial ideology and black slave trade in the 17th century."......
You say, "Maybe it is time paying more attention to this question, not only from hearts, but also from actions" Maybe you should say, "Maybe it is time for us to pay more attention to this question in our hearts and work to change our actions as well."

导致该现象的原因可能是中方作者的读者意识不够强,没有考虑到读者的顺畅感。我国学生写作文是为了交给老师看,为了考试得高分而去按照考试的作文要求来练习写作,如句型富有变化、用高级词汇、多写长难句等,因此忽略了文章的实用交际功能。很少有写作老师想到要向学生介绍英语国家读者的特点,让学生了解什么样的作品才能受英语国家人们的喜爱。而“跨洋互动”提供了一个让我国学生直接与目的语读者群交流的机会,让学生自己去发现去探索如何写出生动、自然的文章。在这里,我们发现,英语国家的读者群偏向于直接、简单明了的表达,他们追求的是信息通畅,读起来顺畅,而不是我们追求的晦涩难懂的复杂句。

2.2 词汇使用不当(美方学生的反馈)

2.2.1 Surprising/amazing

"This is an amazing fact to the movie viewers." I think a better word choice would be that it was a surprising fact rather than an amazing fact. (Cara)

在看过美方同学的评论后,中方学生立刻做出回应:

At the end of your comments, you suggested that surprising is better than amazing. So I looked up in the dictionary and found that there is a little difference between the two words. The difference is that surprising emphasizes beyond expectation while amazing is often used to describe inspiring awe, admiration or wonder.

在查阅字典,分清两词之间的细微差别后,该作者还是保留了原来的“amazing”,觉得“amazing”更符合她想要表达的意思,带有一种敬仰之情。

2.2.2 Town/country/ village

In the first paragraph you say, "Bai Xuemei was enduring her inhuman abducted process in a small country in China." Do you think that instead of country it should say town perhaps?

此处,在表达“乡村、小镇”的意思时,美方建议用“town”,“country”这个词虽然也有“农村、乡下”的意思,但是用得比较少,一般会用“countryside”来表示“农村”这一意思。在二稿中,该作者听从美方意见,将“country”改成了“town”,了解清楚了这个词的用法。而美方学生在作文当中大部分都用“village”来表达,说明中方学生在词汇选择和运用这一方面,还需多积累多运用,尽量多使用表达具体的下义词。

2.2.3 固定搭配

You say, "And it won’t be more suitable to describe our human being’s humanity." I think you are trying to say, " And it couldn't be more suitable to describe our humanity."

此处“can’t/ couldn’t be more...”是一个固定搭配,意为“不能更...”,该作者将其混淆为“won’t be more...”,美方学生指出后,作者立刻改正过来了。

2.3 美方学生时态把握不准确

中方学生指出,不止一个美方学生时态把握不准确。全篇时态不一致,而这在第17轮跨洋互动当中也是普遍现象,在17轮第12组的互动中,中国学生描述故事情节时用了过去时,而美方则是用了现在时。但是中国学生看了美方作文后,对自己的文章进行了修改,把过去时都改成了现在时。有意思的是,美方看了中方作文后,却把时态都改为了过去时。笔者认为,可以和美方同学交流一下时态的运用,采访一下他们写作时是如何选择时态的。

三. 结语

“跨洋互动”突破了现有输入、输出、交互理论的局限,将实践延伸到师生都是第二语言习得者的课堂教学过程。通过互联网打通与目的语使用者交流的渠道,获得他们对自己的输出行为的反馈,实现自己的输出与本族语者的反馈的交互,继而开展有针对性的元语言互动,分享他们的母语语感,这样便有可能看到自己外语能力在某一认知层面上的不足,产生接触更多相关的目的语输入的愿望,朝着接近于本族语者语言能力的方向迈出新的一步。
